Senior Unit Update Week 6 Term 4

What did the fish say when it ran into a wall? Dam.
Pretty bad I know but it helps to break the ice as you prepare for the Senior Unit Update.

There is still plenty happening in the Senior Unit as we head towards the end of the school year. The Senior Unit is still working on completing tasks and enjoying learning. On top of this there is still a range of activities we are doing. Here is the run down.

Unit of Inquiry

We have started a "choose you own adventure" assignment in Unit of Inquiry time. This is a chance to choose a topic you would like to inquire into and then present. It provides students with a chance to display the skills they have picked up through the year and also share about passions and interests. It is looking like a productive time as students research into their topic.

PIE Cyber Safety night.

      Wednesday 22nd November

Open Student Parliament

Thursday 23^rd of November (Week 6)

Where: Taikondi

When: 2.00pm -3.00pm

This Thursday, student parliament will hold an open session for students and members of the school community to come and see what happens. It is a chance to witness the parliament process in action in our school and to see what happens with information brought to parliament. So join us and see how student parliament works.

Friday
This Friday sees plenty of things happening in the Senior Unit.

1) Faith Challenge - a group of students form the school will go to represent our school against other Lutheran school in the area in a range of athletic activities. We wish all the participants the best in their endeavours.






2) Friday Market - This Friday is the last Friday market of the year. As a Senior Unit we have decided to sell fruit and create fruit kebabs. It will be a great chance to use some creativity and help people eat healthy after school. For this we are looking any donations of fruit that we could use to make our kebabs.

·         Students can wear their swimwear to school under their school uniform.  (Either sport or formal uniform can be worn for the week  - whichever is best for your child to change in and out of).

·         Remember to pack the towel and dry underwear in a plastic bag. 

·         For those with asthma please remember to pack your Ventolin if it is not kept at school.

Understanding the "gn" sound

The GN Sound

The ‘gn’ sound is very interesting because it is very different to most other sounds in the English language. English is known for borrowing most of its words from other languages, and this is evident with some of the sounds – like gn. It is used in a number of languages, particularly some old Scottish dialects. The gn sound has an origin similar to that of the kn sound. When English started borrowing these foreign words with the ‘gn’ sound, they were said as they were written. For example, gnome would be said it would be ‘ganoam’, sign would be said as ‘sigan’ – so on and so forth. But eventually, people started to realise that it was much easier to say it without the g sound. So, around the 17^th century people started to say the words without the g, giving us the gn words we know today.

However, despite the new way of saying the words, the spelling stayed the same, leaving us with these strange words. Today it is pretty hard to find a gn word that is still pronounced with the g. A few of these are eggnog, designation, diagnostic etc. Notice how all these words pronounced with both the g and the n have the sound in the middle of the word, not at the start or end as happens with words without the g, like gnome and sign. It’s pretty much impossible to find a word pronounced with the g and the n with the sound at the start or end of the word.

As you can see, most of the gn words have the sound at the start or end of the word. So, in conclusion, the gn sound is an interesting and very unique sound in the English language with an interesting origin. Imagine if people were going around saying ‘ganome’ or ‘champagnee’ instead of gnome and champagne (although ‘champagnee’ does sound kind of cool). It would be quite strange…

·         Congratulations to our year 7's (and their teachers) on a great PYP Exhibition last week. 

·         Thanks to all who helped at the Disco last Friday night.  We had over 130 junior students and over 90 senior students attend. 

 

Staffing news

·         Miss Sarah Gehling (Foundation Teacher) will not be returning to Immanuel in 2018.  Sarah has made the decision to move back to her family in Adelaide.  We thank her for her hard work this year and we wish her every blessing for her future endeavours. 

·         Mr Michael Blasche has been appointed as Foundation Teacher for 2018.  He currently is a year 1/2 teacher at St Johns Lutheran School Eudunda.  We look forward to him joining our school community. 

·         We wish Simon and Josie Wundersitz a great time during their Long Service Leave – Simon’s last day for 2017 is this Friday

Senior Unit Update Week 4 Term 4

Week 4 is here and for the Year 7's that means Exhibition is here. So lets get too it

Exhibition

The Year 7's are putting their final pieces together for their exhibits and things are coming together. They have been running around like mad rabbits putting the finishing parts of the puzzle together. With the presentation night on Wednesday for some it feels like the weight of the world is upon them but we now they will be great.
Exhibition is on this Wednesday Night and all Senior Unit families are welcome to come along and view the exhibition.Students will need to be at school by 6.00pm where a sausage sizzle has been organised for the school community.
Like moths to a flame we will move to the Taikondi at 6.30pm to get a glimpse of the up coming Exhibition and meet the students. Following this the Exhibition will be open for viewing. At 8.00pm the Exhibition will close for the evening.

Year 6
So you may be wondering "What have the Year 6's been doing while the Year 7's are doing exhibition?" Well here is a rundown:
Play Space Assignment
For mathematics this term we have been looking at area and perimeter as a concept. To help us explore the measuring and concepts a task has been set up to design a new play space. Students need to be like architects in this task. Details are below.

New School Play Space Design Assignment

You have been asked to create a new school playground area on the bottom oval. This space would be used by all the school community. The area is a rectangle shaped space and will be the space you need to design in.

Things you need to present in this assignment:

Design of your Play space – You need to draw a design of your play space. A great way to achieve this is to use a birds-eye view. With your design it will be important to name the pieces of equipment you have or explain the space.

Measurement and calculations – You will need to show the measurements for play space and of equipment in the play space. Looking for you to show the calculations and working out for all your problems.

Explanation – An explanation is needed from you to tell us about your play space. Describe the equipment/spaces and how you would expect them to be used.

Mindmap – Make a mindmap showing the mathematics/numeracy you have had to use in this task.

Unit of Inquiry

Having completed our Unit focusing on Resources, we are now shifting to Government and the students will need to be like Government experts and give a talk on a type of government.
This is a great chance to investigate a type of government and find out how different countries are governed.








Literacy
In literacy sessions we have been looking at a number of things.

Class Novel - We read a story call Souperman and in the story a man gained powers when he drank a can of soup. As part of this students are designing their own soup and power that goes with it. It is great to see the creativity that is being shown in the label designs.






Figurative Language
This week we are having a focus on Similes and will use them to create some poetry and have some enjoyment.

In this update there has been similes used. See Mr Jones if you can find all 4 or 5. I forgot which, I don't have a memory like an elephant.
